The Best of the Best

Have you ever read a book that warmed your heart? Did it inspire a stirring within you? Maybe the pages of this story even caused real change in your life.

I have.

I first read Mem Fox’s beloved picture book Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge in college. Do you know what was my first reaction to her words? I cried. It was a beautiful mixture of joy and sorrow. I couldn’t even croak out the final pages.

You see, Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge is friends with a group of wonderful human beings in a nearby nursing home. When one day, his very best friend loses her memory, he rises to the challenge and finds objects that help her remember.

I had multiple grandparents with dementia, and this enabled me to feel right along with the characters. Mem Fox weaved this story so brilliantly. An incredibly heavy topic was tackled with the special kind of innocence that a child possesses.

So, like I asked above, have you ever read a story that truly spoke to you?

I would love to hear about it.

As always, happy reading!
