A List of Children’s Books to Read in August

Somehow, we are all gearing up for back-to-school. As we ponder just where the summer disappeared to, here is a list of books that may help the task of getting back into the swing of things just a bit more fun.

The Crayons Go Back to School by Drew Daywalt

The Crayons Go Back to School by Drew Daywalt

Goodness, I love the idea of crayons going back to school. This book really plays with back-to-school concepts. It’s a lot of fun, and many young readers will definitely relate to the crayons.

Bitsy Bat, School Star by Kaz Windness

Bitsy Bat is a super cute character. I like how her first day of school doesn’t go quite as planned. I think many kids will get that. Many times, we want all the perfect things and happenings, but life just doesn’t happen that way. Bitsy Bat perseveres. I also love how her abilities are unique and ultimately celebrated.

My Mouth is A Volcano by Julia Cook

I’m including this book on the list because slipping into a routine can actually make school more fun for everyone. Cook does such a fabulous job helping children to better understand the “why” behind taking turns. I have always found it helpful to add a few lesson, yet creative stories in the early days of school.

This is a Terrible Book – Will You Help Me Fix It? by Megan West

How could I possibly include a book title like that in a list of books to read? Well, easy. This book is so much fun. I think it sets the tone for the school year. Yes, we’re going to learn about things, like, plot and conflict, but we’re going to have some awesome times while we’re learning. What a way to start the year!
